The City of Utica played
host to the first annual International EMS Competition (IEMSC), Four
teams participated in the inaugural event, two from Poland (the country)
and two from the United States (Utica FD and Dryden ambulance).
The two day event consisted of a Friday night scenario and four Saturday
daytime scenarios.
Each EMS teams was scored based on the
appropriateness, timeliness, safety and quality of the team’s response
to each scenario. These four photo galleries portray a portion of those events.

The Utica Fire Department
hosted a scenario that involved three vehicles and three multi-system trauma victims. On arrival the
EMS team was confronted with a light smoke condition and a rail tank
car.

The scene is a
large young ladies birthday party. There was
an altercation where three people were injured. The most
serious injuries involved a young lady that was stabbed multiple times
in the chest and back. Victim number two was a young man with a head
injury secondary to being hit with baseball bat. Victim number three was
a young lady that was beaten with a baseball bat and sustained severe
internal injuries.

The New Hartford Town Park
was the setting for a 3 year old patient stung by bee who had
a past medical history of asthma. The patient had not improved
after an inhaled albuterol treatment administered by his mother.
The child quickly deteriorated and became unresponsive. Crews were
required to treat with SQ epinephrine and repeat nebulized treatment.
The child then had agonal respirations and became bradycardic requiring
CPR and further ALS resuscitation including endotracheal intubation and
external pacing.

During a wonderful dinner
the volunteers, sponsors, and judges were thanked for their fantastic support, which made this first time event possible.
Dr. Richard Chmielewski, David Ronan, chairman for the IEMSC, discussed
the planning, the events, and introduced the judges, and afterwards, the
participants. Bill Stubb presented the First Place awards, in their
categories, to the Dryden Ambulance Corp., and then to the Polish team
headed by Adam Szyksa.
